Editorial Director

Next City is seeking a dynamic and experienced professional to oversee the journalism produced by the organization, including online daily and weekly newsletters, ebooks, and other information published online and on other platforms, as well as engage with staff in projects and events that further the mission of the organization. As an independent and nonpartisan nonprofit organization with a mission to inspire social, economic and environmental change in cities through journalism and events around the world, we publish award-winning longform features and daily online coverage of the leaders, policies and innovations driving progress in metropolitan regions across the world. Next City adheres to the Society of Professional Journalists Code of Ethics; we are dedicated to producing journalism that is accurate, transparent, fair and impactful.

The editorial director will work with the President to plan and implement the overarching vision that encompasses all of the organization’s journalism. This includes the short-term and long-term goals for Next City’s editorial content across multiple channels, as well as the coverage, target audience and tone for each. The editorial director will produce editorial content, supervise the editorial staff, and may hire writers and photographers, as well as set policies such as submission guidelines or editorial style across all of the platforms. It's the editorial director's responsibility to ensure that the quality of the content meets the standards set by the President and Board of Directors, and assess how well each is meeting its goals and serving its audience. The editorial director also prepares and administers the editorial component of the budget and works with the President to secure funds necessary to undertake and complete projects.

In addition, the editorial director collaborates with staff on social media and fundraising, participates in the planning and execution of Next City events (including Vanguard and other programs that advance our organization’s mission), assists as necessary with accounts receivable and payable and the audit, and supports the Board of Directors and designated Board committees. The editorial director will share knowledge and represent Next City’s brand at conferences, seminars, events and in interviews.

The ideal candidate will have an advanced degree in English, journalism, urban planning or a related field, plus direct experience as an editor/writer/reporter for publications and websites. S/he will have strong communication skills, a keen interest in the English language and grammar, and an understanding of current media and publishing trends, including what drives readers to share and how to create headlines that will maximize content sharing. The successful editorial director is a team player, must be detail oriented, organized, adept at prioritizing tasks, and able to delegate appropriate responsibilities to editors and assistants. Domestic and international travel is required – applicants must have a valid passport.

This is a full-time position in the Philadelphia Office. Salary Range: $70,000 – 85,000 with generous benefits. Next City is an equal opportunity employer.

To apply, email a cover letter, resume, references and writing samples to kay@nextcity.org with "Editorial Director" as the subject.
