Senior Manager of Interpretation

The Senior Manager of Interpretation is a subject matter expert that develops content and teaches for diverse audiences including youth, adults, docents and volunteers. This position serves as a writer, researcher and presenter in support of education, exhibits, public tours, organizational publications and media, and for the marketing department. Applicants should be skilled project managers who are able to easily adjust teaching and communication styles to diverse audiences.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Research and Interpretation

  • Serve as a lead subject matter expert for the organization on Chicago’s historic and contemporary Architecture, design in the built environment, and urban planning issues; serve as a content expert for staff in Education, Exhibits and Public Programs, Development, Marketing, and Sales departments, as well as for Docents and Volunteers.
  • Collaborate with the senior team to create interpretive materials, exhibits, programs and publicity materials; provide research and interpretation for programs relating to permanent and temporary exhibitions, field trips, workshops, publications, media and curricula.
  • Stay abreast of built environment current events, issues and trends to inform exhibits, courses, classes and overall interpretive approach; Cultivate relationships with a network of external subject matter experts across local, national and international architecture and design communities.
  • Support the Vice President of Marketing in responses to media requests; act as one of the official spokespersons for the organization.

Education

  • Teach classes, camps and training on a variety of architecture, design thinking and architectural history subjects including, but not limited to: life-long learning courses for adults; educator professional development institutes; camps and classes for youth in grades 5-12.
  • Lead training and interpretation workshops for docents, volunteers and staff. Support and review content for classes, adult programs, camps and the Teen Academy.
  • Lead training and tour development efforts for docents and participate in docent and volunteer meetings as needed.

Project Management and Administration

  • Direct and coordinate the work of staff, interns, consultants and contractors on a project-by-project basis.
  • Support fundraising efforts with proposal development, grant writing, reporting and presentations.

Qualifications

Skills and Attributes

  • Knowledge of Chicago’s Architecture (both historical and contemporary), design, built environment and urban planning issues.
  • Passion for working with diverse public audiences. Excellent research and writing skills. Strong public speaking and presentation skills.
  • Expert ability to collaborate and support creative teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully manage and complete complex projects.
  • Passionate belief in life-long learning. Knowledge of and comfort using digital technologies for learning.

Education and Experience

  • Master’s degree in architecture, architectural history, preservation, public interest design, design in the built environment, or urban planning.
  • Significant experience interpreting architectural content for adult and youth audiences and proven program development skills.
  • Experience developing creative interpretive techniques and strategies that engage youth and adult learners.
  • Experience in developing digital learning experiences a plus.
