The Chattanooga Design Studio seeks an enthusiastic, detail-oriented urban designer to support its mission and help guide the Studio’s design efforts. The Design Studio is a non-profit community resource that promotes excellence in urban design in Chattanooga through education, facilitation, and collaboration. As a steward of the city’s rich legacy of urban design and planning, the Studio seeks to increase public awareness of urban design issues and their impact upon our quality of life. With a particular emphasis on the importance of the public realm, the Studio will provide high level coordination of urban design efforts to help frame a vision for the future growth of the city that promotes optimal value for the community.
The Urban Design Coordinator will be responsible for performing, assisting with, and leading a broad array of urban design and architectural investigations and analysis in support of the operation of the Studio. The Urban Design Coordinator will assist with both office management and program-related work. This position operates in conjunction with and reports to the Executive Director and is responsible for the day to day direction, oversight and management of a robust internship program. Therefore, significant leadership attributes are imperative.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate critical thinking in the design of communities at a variety of scales; demonstrate knowledge of principles and practices in both architecture and urban design; conduct studies and provide recommendations for a wide range of urban design issues; exhibit strong written, oral and graphic communication skills; be adept at community relations; be capable of effectively working in ethnically, and socio-economically diverse environments; and possess illustrative graphic skills in hand renderings and/or computer aided techniques. The candidate will also exhibit leadership and administrative skills that will enable them to effectively lead and perform work within a not-for-profit business.
Required Education and Experience
The minimum requirements for the position are a bachelor's Degree in architecture, landscape architecture, planning, or related field from an accredited college or university and four (4) or more years of relevant architecture and /or urban design experience.
Candidates should also exhibit:
-Demonstrated knowledge of urban design principles and practices,
-Familiarity with general building planning and development standards and ADA requirements,
to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, including public
-Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate work and activities,
-Ability to work effectively in a diverse workforce.
-Demonstrated leadership and management abilities.
Commensurate with experience.
