Royal Oak was voted as one of the 10 best Detroit suburbs for young professionals to work. Our recently redesigned office in downtown Royal Oak is close to the big city with a small town feel. And, we re two doors away from the Roak Brewing Company taproom! The planner will serve the ongoing planning and zoning needs of our local municipal clients, with the opportunity to work with SAFEbuilt Studio planners across the country.
This planner will work closely with our planning team on ongoing public-sector client work, including development review and regulatory drafting with job responsibilities that include:
Work on-site and remotely for public sector clients providing support for zoning and development review
Prepare for and attend public outreach events and public meetings
Assist with the creation of zoning ordinances and code-related projects, including: research, regulatory drafting, illustrating, mapping, and document layout and formatting
Assist with SAFEbuilt Studio marketing and business development efforts
Applicants for this position must be able to work independently on concurrent projects in a relatively fast-paced environment that will include some evening meetings. Key areas of experience include:
Employment as an urban, city, or community planner
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Knowledge of local government processes, including both development processing and commission/council dynamics
Experience with site plan document review and other associated development procedures
Ability to undertake detailed planning research in areas including specific regulatory topics, demographics and community trends, and best practices
Proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite, Adobe design software, GIS, and SketchUp
Education: Masters Degree in urban planning or related field is preferred and an AICP certification is desirable.
Experience: 5+ years relevant experience in current planning/regulatory work; job title will be determined based on experience
